Teach First, Then Coach

A common mistake in leadership is trying to coach before teaching.
Coaching is not about expecting people to figure everything out on their own without support. There is a sequence that makes coaching effective.
You teach first. Then you coach.
Start by giving people the skills, knowledge, and context they need. Make sure they understand what good looks like. Give them the foundation.
Then shift into coaching.
Think of a basketball coach. Players do drills again and again to build their skills. They practice the fundamentals. But when the game starts, the coach is no longer playing for them.
The coach observes, gives feedback, and helps them improve in real time.
That is what coaching looks like in practice. You are not stepping in to do the work. You are guiding someone as they apply what they have learned.
This approach builds confidence and ownership. People are not just following instructions. They are developing the ability to think, adapt, and perform on their own.
And when that happens, productivity naturally increases. Not because people are being pushed harder, but because they are becoming more capable.
